Hanyang City Wall, Seoul is the wall surrounding Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, and it is approximately 18㎞ long, and it runs along the ridges of the four mountains of Seoul: Bugaksan, Inwangsan, Namsan, and Naksan. With the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo, the first king of the dynasty, constructed palaces and the Royal Ancestral Shrine first and established Doseong Chukjo Dogam, an agency for construction of city wall in 1395 (Taejo 4) and began the construction of the city wall from January 1396. Later, 8 gates were constructed to Hanyang City Wall; Heunginjimun Gate was constructed in the east, Doneuimun Gate in the west, Sungnyemun in the south, and Sukcheongmun Gate in the north, and also Honghwamun Gate in the northeast, Gwangheemun Gate in the southeast, Changeuimun Gate in the northwest, and Sodeokmun Gate in the Southwest between the four gates above.
Hanyang City Wall, Seoul stretches from Jung-gu to Jongno-gu, Yongsan-gu, Seongbuk-gu, and Seodaemun-gu by passing each ward partially. Among them, approximately ⅓ of the wall passes through Jung-gu including 479m section between Sungnyemun Gate to Seosomun Gate, 711m section between Seosomun Gate to Doneuimun Gate, 730m section between Heunginjimun Gate to Gwangheemun Gate, and 5,390m section between Gwangheemun Gate to Sungnyemun Gate. However, Japan established the City Wall Disposal Committee in 1907 and tore down the walls on the left and right sides of Sungnyemun Gate on the pretext of the visit of Japan’s Crown Prince Yoshihito in October in the same year, which began the mutilation of the city walls. The rest of walls that survived the mutilation were neglected until the 1970’s with the battlement and masonry left collapsed. Seoul government began a full scale Seoul City Wall Restoration Project from 1975.
Current progress of the Seoul City Wall Restoration Project within Jung-gu is as follows; the Sungnyemun Chamber of Commerce section between Sungnyemun Gate ~ Soeuimun Gate, Myongji Building section between Chamber of Commerce ~ Soeuimun Gate, Former Dongdaemun Stadium section between Heunginjimun Gate ~ Gwangheemun Gate, and Gwangheemun Gate South section between Gwangheemun Gate ~ Dongho Bridge have been restored. The 1,053m section between Dongho Bridge ~ Jangchung-ro and many other sections between Gwangheemun Gate ~ Sungnyemun Gate were restored. Hanyang City Wall, Seoul was designated as the Historical Site No. 10 in 1963.
