Myeongdong Nanta Theatre (明洞亂打專用館) is a performance venue dedicated exclusively to 'Nanta'. When
'Non-Verbal Performance (a new genre composed entirely of rhythm and beats
without any dialogue)' began sweeping the world in the early 1990s and gained
explosive popularity in the global performance market, PMC Productions
developed 'Nanta' as a musical format targeting a global audience in order to
overcome the limitations of the domestic production market. 'Nanta' blends Korea's traditional
Samulnori percussion with Western performance styles, set on a large kitchen
stage where four chefs — a Head Chef, Female, Nephew, and Sexy Guy — perform
Samulnori using various kitchen utensils such as pots, frying pans, and plates
while preparing food for a wedding reception. First performed at Hoam Art Hall in October
1997, 'Nanta' began entering overseas performance markets in 1999, and in 2003
performed on Broadway in New York to great audience acclaim. Foreign tourists account for an average of
67% of the audience at every performance, and the proportion of foreign
audience members continues to grow. In October 2009, the Myeongdong Nanta
Theatre with a total capacity of 386 seats was established on the 3rd floor of
the UNESCO Building in Myeongdong, and dedicated theatres were also opened in
Hongdae, Chungjeongno, and Jeju, resolving the long-standing issue of unmet
viewing demand. In 2013, a dedicated venue was also opened
in Bangkok, Thailand. Unlike ordinary theatres, the Myeongdong
Nanta Theatre is a space dedicated solely to 'Nanta', and is therefore equipped
with lighting and a stage designed to maximize the fun and impact of the
performance. In keeping with Myeongdong's theme, the
venue adapts most quickly to changing performance needs, and its high
accessibility attracts many foreign visitors. In particular, since Chinese visitors make
up the largest proportion of the audience, all staff are equipped with basic
Chinese conversation skills, ensuring that Chinese tourists have no difficulty
enjoying the performance.
